Riverdale initially was a rural community that took its first step towards modern-day in the 1850s when Grand Trunk Railroad steamed through the borough. The neighbourhood was originally constructed to house labourers and their bosses who worked to build the railroad. It was amended into the city of Toronto in 1884.
