Parks —

Bowness is home to a number of parks. Whether you want to go for a stroll, take your kid to a playground or encourage them to take up a sport, you'll find the facilities you need at the local parks.

  • Bowness Park is a popular boating and picnic spot in the summers. The lagoon that runs along its southern edge transforms into an ice skating destination during the winter. Dogs are allowed in the park so long as they're kept on a leash and children love riding the miniature train during the summer.
  • Canada Olympic Park is a multi-purpose facility used as a training ground for professional athletes and a recreational area for the public. Summer activities at the park include mountain biking, mini-golf and summer bobsleigh. Winter events include skiing and snowboarding at the winter sports area located at high elevations.

Recreation —

  • Activities on Bow River

The Bow River runs along the northern edge of the park. Its winding biking and walking trails beckon fitness enthusiasts.

The Environment and Beautification Committee organises the annual community cleanup.

  • Events

The Bowness Parade is held in July, around the same time as the annual Calgary Stampede. It moves along Bowness Road, starting at Shouldice Bridge and ending at the local community centre. The procession begins at 9 am, although locals are ready with their lawn chairs well before the parade starts.

The event consists of acrobats, horses, cowboys and cowgirls, and music. The fun bit is that every vehicle or float tosses candy to the crowd and kids hustle to collect as many as they can. The parade turned 30 in 2019 and did not take place in 2020 owing to COVID-19 restrictions. That year a group of moms in the neighbourhood led a holiday procession through the neighbourhood with social distancing in place.

Other events in Bowness include the Tour de Bowness bike race and street festival, Halloween on Mainstreet, and Bowness Auto Parts Show and Shine. The events play an important role in reinforcing the community spirit and enlivening the atmosphere.

  • Bowness Area Redevelopment Plan (ARPs)

The improvements have drawn new businesses to the area. The community association continues playing a proactive role in redeveloping Bowness while ensuring that it retains its distinct atmosphere.
