Collingwood was founded in 1959 after the area was annexed by the City of Calgary in 1910.

The community had a populace of 2,222 people living in 978 homes in the 2012 municipal census, down -0.4% from its 2011 census of 2,231. In 2012, it had a total population of 1,390/km2 (3,600/sq. mi) on a total land of 1.6 km2 (0.62 sq. mi).

The community's median age is 43.2 years, while the median age for the rest of Calgary is 37.4 years. Charleswood has an average of 2.4 persons per family and a near-equal gender ratio of 50% female and male residents. A whopping 21% of the residents of Collingwood are above the age of 65, compared to 10% for the rest of Calgary.
