Hawkwood was founded in 1981 and named after John and Joseph Hawkwood, the original landowners.

In 2005, the average household income of families in this neighbourhood was $96,806, and 9.1% of people were considered to be low-income. Immigrants amounted to 29.6% of the total population in 2000. Condominiums or flats accounted for 4.1% of the buildings. While 5.5% of the housing was rented, the rest was occupied by homeowners.
