Lakes —

Glenmore Reservoir is just a stone’s throw away from the community. It offers residents a wide variety of outdoor activities like hiking/cycling along the water’s edge, sailing, canoeing, fishing, and rowing. Swimming is not permitted here, as this is the city’s primary source of drinking water.

Residents of Haysboro enjoy hiking along the various trails around the Glenmore Reservoir. The Reservoir also allows sailing during the summer months. Ice skating and swimming in the community’s wave pools are other recreational activities for the entire family.

Weaselhead Natural Environmental Park is another favorite area not too far away that offers hiking trails, canoeing, and tours.

Some excellent parks in the surrounding area include Chinook Park, South Glenmore Park, and Oakwood Park.

When it comes to shopping, the residents of Haysboro have a wide range of shopping malls to walk into – all located a few minutes from the community on Macleod Trail.

Chinook Centre is one of Calgary’s most sophisticated malls with high-end department stores, brands, and cinemas.

Deerfoot Meadows Mall, one of Canada’s largest outdoor malls, has over 50 megastores, popular chains, and factory outlets. South Alberta’s only IKEA store is housed here.

Glenmore Landing is another shopping mall on 90 Avenue SW, a five-minute drive from the community. It has over 50 brand name stores.

Anytime Fitness is a spotless fitness gym on Elbow Drive. It has friendly staff and is a great place to work out. Plus, there are several nearby shops to do your shopping after your workout.

Demographics

According to the 2016 Census of Canada, 7,165 people lived in Haysboro that same year. About 75% of people are aged 5 to 64, and there is an equal population (12%) of children aged 0 to 14 years and seniors between 65 and 84 years.

Over 85% of the population comprises couple families with or without children living at home.

Over 90% of people speak only English, and about 7% speak both English and French. A small percentage (1%) don’t speak either English or French.

Immigrants make up about 25% of the population, but most of them are Canadian citizens.

Owners occupy about 60% of the houses, and the rest (about 40%) are rented out.

Developer/builder/history

The Haysboro land was originally a dairy farm owned by Harry Hays, a man who went on to become one of the city’s mayors, MP, and Senator. He sold the land to developers to raise money for a campaign for mayor. The land was annexed to Calgary in 1956. The community was established two years later, in 1958, and was named after its original owner, Harry Hays. Today, the community is represented by the Ward 11 councillor at the Calgary City Council.
