This Toronto neighbourhood lies along the Humber River, where it gets its name, as most of the neighbourhoods on the banks of this river. Humbermede is also known as Emery. You will find many of the locals referring to this community by this name. To the north of this neighbourhood lies Finch Avenue West, to its south lies Sheppard Avenue West, and on the east side is Highway 400. Humber River encircles west of the neighbourhood. It is surrounded by Smithfield, Humber Summit, Jane and Finch, Downsview, Pelmo Park, Humberlea, The Elms and Thistletown.

The very first settler in Humbermede or Emery was a German pioneer named Issac Devins. Sometime in the 1790s, Devins came to Canada from Pennsylvania. He was followed by another Pennsylvania denizen John Crosson, who arrived here in the year 1799. Crosson purchased half of Devins’ farm lot in exchange for his horse.

More people had moved in by the 1870s to this growing community that lay at the crossing of two important roads Weston Road and Finch Avenue. By now Humbermede was a fairly well-established farming hamlet. A few amenities had come up too including a store, school, church and blacksmith’s shop. The post office opened up later in 1879. The origin of the name Emery is not known. The locals adopted it in place of ‘Dayton’ that was being used here earlier and was causing a lot of confusion with other places with the same name.

In the 1960s the community began to take on a more residential feel as subdivisions started to come up alongside industries, both replacing the farmlands. The small town, the agricultural area was now slowly transforming into the prime real estate area that it is today.
