The very first settler in Humbermede or Emery was a German pioneer named Issac Devins. Sometime in the 1790s, Devins came to Canada from Pennsylvania. He was followed by another Pennsylvania denizen John Crosson, who arrived here in the year 1799. Crosson purchased half of Devins’ farm lot in exchange for his horse.

More people had moved in by the 1870s to this growing community that lay at the crossing of two important roads Weston Road and Finch Avenue. By now Humbermede was a fairly well-established farming hamlet. A few amenities had come up too including a store, school, church and blacksmith’s shop. The post office opened up later in 1879. The origin of the name Emery is not known. The locals adopted it in place of ‘Dayton’ that was being used here earlier and was causing a lot of confusion with other places with the same name.

In the 1960s the community began to take on a more residential feel as subdivisions started to come up alongside industries, both replacing the farmlands. The small town, the agricultural area was now slowly transforming into the prime real estate area that it is today.

On the north side of Humbermede is the main commercial and shopping area. On Weston Road and Finch Avenue, you find the best restaurants clustered. Here you can enjoy a stunning collection of cuisines from all over the world, including African, Asian, Jamaican, Italian, European, and Spanish.

For fitness enthusiasts, Humbermede has facilities so that they never have to venture far out from the neighbourhood to stay in shape. The Habitant Arena has its house hockey league for youngsters plus public skating.

If you prefer to curl up with a book to pass the time, the Woodview Park public library is a good place to head to.

Connectivity-wise Humbermede offers the advantage of providing both bus and subway routes. Take the bus from Finch Avenue to reach the Finch station and take the Yonge-University-Spadina subway line. Take the Weston Road bus to reach the Weston Go Train station or the Keele station to access the Bloor-Danforth subway line.

Both these roads, Finch Avenue and Weston Road, are arterial roadways that put you within easy driving distance of the city’s buzzing hubs in the centre or the north-south major roadways. Both Highways 400 and Highway 401 are a mere five minutes distance from the neighbourhood.

With some reputed schools lying close by, it is clear why parents with young children and older students prefer Humbermede to set up their new home. Gulfstream Public School, Daystrom Public School, and St. Jude Elementary are some of the well-known educational institutions here.
