Being the western-most residential community in Toronto, Markland Wood enjoys several privileges that set it apart from many other neighbourhoods.
In 1958, Marc Cavotti, a known developer, bought 400 of the thousand acres from the Silverthorn family, who owned it since 1809. The family was failing to keep pace with the increase in the tax burden imposed on them by Toronto's expansion. Every year that Toronto grew closer, the taxes on their farmland grew higher.
After the sale, the Silverthorn family requested the developer not cut down the considerable hardwood forest and to preserve as many trees as possible. This particular lot is now a section of the 10-acre Millwood Park, located on Silverthorne Bush Drive. The piece of land, which was known as "Marc's Land," owing to his ownership, soon got the name "Markland."
In 2010-11, Markland Wood commemorated the 50th anniversary. In 2011, Markland Homes Association changed its constitution and is now known as the Markland Wood Homeowners Association.
