Steeles Avenue-Royal crest Park-Finch Avenue borders the neighbourhood on the Northside, and the Humber River Valley on the South, East and West. It also covers the residential areas of Etobicoke located north of the west branch of the Humber River and west of Kipling Avenue and is identified as Mount Olive-Silverstone-Jamestown, named for three streets in the area.

Smithfield, named after Robert Smith, who was a landowner of the area back in the 1830s and donated a large piece of land for the first community church. The land was located at the corner of Albion and Martin Grove Roads and a simple log structure, Smithfield Church was built there, which was later torn down.

The neighbourhood provides excellent public transportation services to its residents along the major streets, as well as several secondary streets. Smithfield is connected to the Yonge-University-Spadina subway line or the Bloor-Danforth subway line via the bus line that runs through the neighbourhood.
