Thorncrest Village Real Estate Overview

Surrounding communities might be of interest as well:

Architected and planned by Eugene Faludi, the entire area was once considered one of the first modern suburbs to have come up in Toronto.

Thorncrest Village gets its name after the erstwhile summer house of Sir William Pearce Howland, one of the first Lieutenant Governors to have served Ontario. The Thorncrest house, constructed in 1854, continues to stand on a site that is set back from the main street at 36 Rathburn Road.

Developer Marshall Foss bought the Thorncrest estate in 1944 and laid the foundation of the present-day Thorncrest Village neighbourhood. The community was shaped following the idea of the renowned Country Club subdivision of Kansas City in the United States.

Thorncrest Village is credited with introducing the idea of having an active homeowners association, restrictions on neighbourhood zoning and buildings, curvilinear and cul-de-sac street patterns, as well as a focus on the conservation of nature. Faludi garnered widespread accolades for his work in the neighbourhood and was subsequently called to design many other Torontonian communities.

The non-profit Architectural Conservancy of Ontario published an article in 1984 and claimed that the real appeal of the neighbourhood lies in its apparent randomness. The neighbourhood's streets follow the natural terrain, with varying setbacks, well-preserved wooded lots and new shade trees reaching substantial heights. The best part: the community has well-defined boundaries, and residents can always tell that they in a special place.

Who Lives In Thorncrest Village Homes

The Thorncrest Village neighbourhood is known for being a tight-knit community that welcomes a diverse population. There are just about 200 homes here, and a large chunk of residents belong to the Thorncrest Homes Association. The neighbourhood has a large population of millennials, working professionals and families, coming from different parts of the country and the world.

Thorncrest Village Homes Are Perfect For

Given its proximity to amenities and commercial centres in Toronto's North York District, the Thorncrest Village neighbourhood is just the place for working professionals. Self-employed or people employed in downtown Toronto would find the community both affordable and conveniently located. Nature lovers who like to relax in urban parks and indulge in recreational options will find this neighbourhood the best place to live.

Thorncrest Village Homes Are Not So Perfect For

The Thorncrest Village neighbourhood is not the perfect neighbourhood for anyone who enjoys the nightlife of the city center. The community undoubtedly has a close-knit feel, but those concerned about personal space may find this slightly intrusive.

Life And Style, Amenities And Things To Do In Thorncrest Village

Thorncrest Village is a neighbourhood where residents can find everything they need for a comfortable, healthy and happy lifestyle.

Residents fulfil their immediate shopping needs by visiting the Thorncrest Plaza, a mini shopping complex located on the north-west edge of Rathburn Road and Islington Avenue. This shopping plaza features a bank, supermarket, barbershop, dry cleaner, coffee shop, tailor, drug store, hardware store, a framing shop, wine shop and a handful of professional offices.

Thorncrest Village neighbourhood is located less than five minutes' drive from the upscale Humbertown Shopping Centre. This major shopping complex is situated on The Kingsway. Residents can also access the Kingsway Village and Bloor West Village shopping districts, both of which are located along Bloor Street West.

Many eateries and restaurants dot the landscape of this neighbourhood. Mama Earth Organics, Natalie's Kitchen, Paul & Sandy's Real Barbecue Co, Magoo's Gourmet Hamburgers & Ice-Cream, and Trattoria Leonardo are a few of them.

Rosethorn Junior School, Humber Valley Village Junior Middle School, and St. Gregory Catholic Elementary are a few schools catering to the kids in the community.

The neighbourhood falls under the administration of the Thorncrest Homeowners Association, which is the sole homeowner association in the city to own and run its clubhouse and recreational facilities. The Thorncrest clubhouse organizes many social events for residents of the neighbourhood. These events include family barbecues, theme dinners and a kids' Christmas show.

The Thorncrest Homeowners Association also maintains two tennis courts and a children's play area, both of which are adjacent to the clubhouse and swimming pool. Residents are often seen spending their summertime on the tennis courts taking lessons, playing major leagues, round robins, as well as spring and fall tournaments.

Residents of the neighbourhood can also be a part of the family "Fun Day," which coincides with an exclusive pool opening gathering. This annual event brings together a bake sale, pony rides, carnival food, a clown and a variety of fun-filled games.

The facilities offered by the Thorncrest community include a 25-metre outdoor swimming pool, where people of all ages cool off in the summertime. There are also qualified instructors who provide lessons to novice swimmers.

Thorncrest Village Real Estate Market

Homes for sale in Thorncrest Village are usually found sitting on meandering tree-lined streets with Cast-iron street lamps. One of the most exclusive real estate markets in Toronto's west end, these houses are in high demand.

The area has witnessed several transformations in recent decades, the most notable one of them being the larger modern houses. These structures have emerged along the streets, increasing the architectural diversity of the neighbourhood.

The original houses in the neighbourhood include modernist-style homes and ranch-style bungalows from the late 1940s and 50s. These residential homes are slowly being replaced by bigger brick-and-stone executive-style homes.
