Corktown Real Estate Overview

Surrounding communities might be of interest as well:

.

How and why Corktown got its name is not quite known for sure. Some believe that the name came from the fact that these parts used to be an Irish enclave in the first half of the 19th century for immigrants from County Cork and this was why it was named after the origin location. Some others believe that the distillery and the many cork-stopper manufacturers who used to have their businesses here gave the location its name.

With quite a few landmarks located within the neighbourhood, including the St. Paul's Basilica and Enoch Turner Schoolhouse Corktown is quite a well- known place in Toronto.

Who Lives in Corktown Homes

Corktown has a predominantly young population. This location has become a very coveted one for young professionals who are looking to buy their first home in a neighbourhood that is affordable. The access that Corktown offers to the downtown business and entertainment hubs makes it an ideal spot for them.

Add to this the fact that there are quite a few works/ live spaces here and you can see why the young professional crowd is flocking to Corktown now. The studio apartments have made it possible for first-time buyers to invest in Corktown real estate and hence a good number of first-time homeowners are here as well.

Corktown Homes Are Perfect For

The convenience that Corktown offers for people who need to get to downtown makes it perfect for those who hate driving to those parts in heavy traffic as a daily chore. You can take the streetcar from King Station to get here or walk down from Union Station. For those who prefer using public transport to get to and from their community, Corktown is ideal.

Affordability is another factor that draws people to this neighbourhood. New home buyers who do not have a huge budget for a home can invest here in a property. In particular, those in search of condo lofts, work studios doubling up as living space and well- equipped office space find quite a good number of options to choose from here, thanks to the more flexible zoning bylaws in force here.

Life And Style, Amenities And Things To Do In Corktown

Corktown is coming into its own in recent years after the zoning bylaws were relaxed here, allowing development to happen at a faster pace. The emergence of the life in work studios here in the neighbourhood has pumped in fresh life into the real estate market as well as the community itself.

The neighbourhood has quite a few attractions, and these helps keep it on the map at all times. The Enoch Turner School is one such significant landmark. Built-in 1848, this was the free school in Toronto that came up thanks to its benefactor, well-known brewer in these parts, Enoch Turner. Today, this school building still stands but as a museum maintained by the Ontario Heritage Trust. Another old school also stands here in Corktown- the Inglenook Community High School that dates back to 1887.

Among the other historic buildings found here in the neighbourhood, the St. Paul's Basilica stands out. It was the first Roman Catholic church in Toronto. Originally built in 1822, the current structure dates back to 1887. The associated Catholic School was established in 1842 and is the oldest Catholic elementary school in Toronto.

There may be a limitation on the shopping options within the neighbourhood but with St. Lawrence Market lying so close by, Corktown residents do have shopping options nearby. Walk down to this market, and you have everything you can need.

Fitness enthusiasts find Corktown an ideal spot to call home thanks to the many facilities here. At the St. Lawrence Community Centre, you have squash courts, gym, swimming pool and a weight room. The John Innes Community Recreation Centre has a full-fledged cardio room plus a running track. Located on Sherbourne Street, this centre also has an indoor pool, a gymnasium and games room apart from a woodworking shop and craft room. Right next door lies an indoor hockey arena.

For younger ones, the Sackville playground is the perfect haunt where they can expend excess energy with no restrictions. It also has a wading pool and basketball court.

Corktown Real Estate Market

If you are looking for an authentic Victorian style home, then Corktown is precisely the place where you should be starting your search. This neighbourhood is where you will find some of Toronto's most stunning, oldest Victorian row-houses, some going back to the 1850s and 1860s. These were designed to be workers' cottages when they were first built. Most of these are clustered off the main streets and tucked away on charming, little pathways that add to the semblance of complete seclusion.

Modern homes are often for sale here thanks to the recent explosion of retrofit projects that have converted commercial buildings into homes. Most of these studio lofts that are the rage among the younger population in Toronto can be found in the lanes and side streets of Corktown.
