Moss Park was originally part of a 100 acre Park Lot in the 1800s, owned by one of early Toronto's wealthiest citizens, William Allen. William Allen commissioned the construction of a vast mansion on his estate. The mansion stood were the city park of the same name is today.
The Allen estate was situated on the west side of Sherbourne between Queen and Shuter, which was demolished during urban renewal. It became the heart of Toronto's industrial area and home to large factories. Residential units were constructed to house the workers employed by the factories. It was one of Toronto's most significant public housing projects.
In the 1960s, a large strip of the industrial and residential buildings were removed to build the Moss Park public housing project at Queen and Parliament Street run by the Toronto Community Housing Corporation. The Moss Park, a public housing project, is a group of three large towers of 16-storey, 300-unit subsidized apartment towers. In the 1970s, after the deindustrialization, Moss Park became the poorest part of the city.
Moss Park has seen rapid redevelopment. Industrial structures such as the factories of the Distillery District and the Merchandise Building were redeveloped into fashionable shopping areas. The Corktown row houses like those of Cabbagetown were largely refurbished and are in high demand now. Getting around the neighbourhood is made easier with bus and streetcar routes that run through the community.
After a lot of transformation, Moss Park is now home to picturesque Allan Gardens and its lovely conservatories. There are several good schools in the neighbourhood that include St. Michaels Choir Junior and Senior. The area is in proximity to Voice Intermediate Private School, George Brown College and George Brown Ryerson University.
