The first settlers came here to Humberlea in the 1800s when most of these parts were used for agricultural purposes. This continued until the mid-1900s, at which point there was a prosperous farming community here. The Griffith brothers owned large tracts of the land here until the 1940s when their property was sold to the federal government. The Humberlea War Veterans subdivision was planned on those lands, and World War II Veterans each got a quarter-acre property, which they used to build their simple frame houses. Many of these remain today although later subdivision took place in these locations as well.

Weston Road, bisecting the neighbourhood is one of the major landmarks and also an arterial road here. To the west, Humber River Valley adds its glorious natural beauty to the neighbourhood. To the east is the Canadian Pacific Railway and to the south Highway, 401 offers easy access to Toronto.

The first residents in Humberlea were of British origin and back then almost the whole of the population here was British. However, in the later years, several Italians began to settle in these parts. Humberlea can be thought of like an amalgamation of two segments, each with very distinct personas. The southwest is the predominantly Italian segment, with several detached homes. For Humberlea residents, the major shopping area lies on Weston Road, close to Highway 401. Many head down to The Crossroads Centre, a pretty comprehensive shopping area with home décor stores, fashion stores, furniture and appliance outlets, in nearby Pelmo Park.
