A city sub-division plan established the Town of Mimico in 1856, but the area was not separated from the former Etobicoke township until 1911. The origin of Mimico's land area is mainly three family farms, namely- Hendry Estate (between Queens Avenue and Royal York), Stock Estate (North of Portland), and Van Every Estate (between Dwight Avenue and Royal York Road). It was an independent municipality until 1967 when it was joined Etobicoke. Etobicoke then merged into the city of Toronto and the GTA in 1998.

Today, Mimico is mostly a residential area with two commercial strips. One of these is along Royal York Road and the other along Lake Shore Boulevard West, running parallel to the shoreline (from Louisa Avenue to Allen Avenue). A former commercial strip also runs along Mimico Avenue between Royal York Road and Lake Shore Boulevard West. Some industrial areas exist along the railway corridor. In early 2012, Mimico was ranked first on the "Where to Buy Now" list of Toronto Life magazine.
