Runnymede Real Estate Overview

Surrounding communities might be of interest as well:

Development in the Runnymede neighbourhood started on the property of John Scarlett, who established himself here in 1808. He quickly gained fame as the owner of many mills along the Humber River.

In 1838, the businessman erected an English cottage-style, rough-cast house and named it "Runnymede." This property was situated at the intersection of present-day Runnymede and Dundas Roads. The Runnymede House does not exist today, but structures like Runnymede Hospital, Runnymede High School, Runnymede Road and many of the local churches commemorate the name of this landmark.

The neighbourhood has historically opposed large scale redevelopment. In 1966, Romark Developments proposed the construction of a huge apartment complex, comprising 15 apartment buildings, shopping centres and open space, at Bloor and Jane streets. It would have spanned over the area from Jane and Bloor Street to Runnymede Road and further north to Colbeck Street. More than a thousand taxpayers opposed the project at a public meeting on March 7, 1966, at Runnymede School.

But today, Runnymede is a vibrant, fast-paced, and welcoming neighbourhood that has a cosmopolitan and well-developed character. It is snuggled between Toronto's most affluent areas, such as Bloor West Village, Baby Point, and High Park.

Runnymede Homes Are Perfect For

The neighbourhood is ideal for the young, hip generation wanting to be around other influential people. At the same time, the plentiful green spaces welcome people who like their homes close to the great outdoors.

Runnymede Homes Are Not So Perfect For

Those homebuyers who are used to the buzz of downtown Toronto may find Runnymede slightly cut-off. Those who enjoy a vibrant and busy nightlife may not appreciate living in this family-focused neighbourhood.

Life And Style, Amenities And Things To Do In Runnymede

The lifestyle of Runnymede residents is exceptionally convenient as the neighbourhood provides commercial and recreational amenities that make for a fulfilling living experience. When it comes to shopping, residents find plenty of options. Walk along Jane Street and find an eclectic mix of stores, including a local grocer, a pharmacy, antique stores, and boutique stores.

Annette Street is known to have a large discount store and also houses restaurants, hair salons, professional offices, and more. Dundas Street, located just east of Jane Street, is a magnet for local and regional shoppers. The extended commercial strip includes fast food outlets, two shopping plazas, bars and eateries, gas stations and auto repair shops, fitness and self-defence centres, and liquor stores.

Sweet Flour Bake Shop - Patisserie 27 - Bryden's (Pubs and Sandwiches) - Mad Mexican are a few restaurants doting the landscape of Runnymede.

Runnymede is also an extremely kids-friendly neighbourhood, providing educational instructions and extra-curricular options just around the block. There's the Runnymede Collegiate Institute, which offers Math, Science & Technology Programs to students with a keen interest in these subjects. King George Junior Public School, Runnymede Junior and Senior Public School, James Culnan Catholic Elementary, and St. Pius X Catholic Elementary are a few of the schools residents can attend.

Runnymede residents are within walking distance to the lush parks, Etienne BržlŽ and Home Smith, both of which sit along the Humber River. Residents can visit these scenic parks and indulge in many activities like jogging, cycling, fishing and family picnics.

By going further north of the railway tracks off of Cobalt Avenue, residents come to Runnymede Park, a medium-sized park that features a playground, wading pool, and sports fields. This park is home to the George Bell Arena, a prominent site for local ice hockey leagues.

Runnymede Real Estate Market

Runnymede is known for its beautiful tree-lined streets with a splendid mix of housing options. Houses for sale here include grand Victorian mansions on English Cottage and Tudor-style homes on Humbercrest Boulevard, Windermere Avenue at St. Johns Road, pre- and post-war bungalows, duplex and triplex units, and a massive array of detached and semi-detached homes.

There's no discernible building pattern to these houses because they were constructed in various stages between 1890 and 1950. These homes have many different types of exteriors, such as wood, frame siding, insulator bricks, and concrete. Many of these houses have gambrel roofs, which were popular in the 1900s and which lend an appealing barn-like look.
